channels reveal the profile of the channel owner / author, right?
If so, I think this should be more obviously reflected in the UI. Maybe a small avatar bubble of the profile on the corner of the channel avatar?
Anyway, there’s a lot of opportunities for improving this UX when channels are properly separated from chats.
For example, in my own custom chatmail app, I made channels more like publishing buckets like a “close friends” story on instagram. Since the channel author is revealed, I just removed the ability to set a custom avatar for a channel. So it’s like
Profile: John Doe
Channels:
John Doe (default)
Baby photos

Each channel is just a topic and broadcast list essentially. If someone is subscribed to more than one channel from the same author, the content is just merged together in one feed.
If someone wants a custom avatar for a channel, that is a good heuristic for knowing that they actually want a new profile and not a new channel.
This is indeed a problem I’ve encountered myself. The channel I created became way more popular than I expected. I was told to create a new profile for it but, too late, may main identity is now “spammed” by people reacting in private to my channel posts.
For my next channel, I created a new profile, as suggested. But this channel became more intimate and is a channel where, in the end, I’m a lot more confortable sharing my identity.
Too late…
This is a major problem for the wide adoption of channels. I listed it here:
