Tappable hashtags

Expected Behavior

If users tap on a hashtag, all messages with that hashtag are displayed in the search results, like in DC-Desktop.

Actual Behavior

DC-Android and DC-iOS don’t have tappable hashtags.

Explanation

I think it makes sense in all chats, but especially in channels. If channel owners use hashtags, subscribers could easily view all messages on a specific topic by tapping the hashtag. This would be particularly useful if channels have existed for a while and therefore have a large number of posts.

do you know about any channels that are using that?

or do you know about channel owners requesting it?

or is it more smth. “nice to have”? because hashtags were added on desktop far before channels, probably “just so”, without looking at concrete usecases.

we checked lots of other private messenger - no one supports hashtags. it is more a social media feature, where ppl agree on some hashtag implicitly by just using it in different channels and you discover stuff by that (it is known that telegram supports hashtags, but telegram is by far not a “private messenger”, but more a “social media tool”)

I think it’s a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem. The feature is only available in DC-Desktop, many users aren’t aware of it, and the other versions don’t have it. Therefore, it’s not widely used. At least that’s been my experience.

Perhaps it would be used more often if it were a standard feature? It’s hard to say. I hardly ever use channels myself, but I can imagine it would make sense there. And perhaps in regular chats as well. Of course, the question is also how complex the implementation would be.

maybe, but tbh, i doubt. it is really about “social media”, which is not the case for Delta Chat, also not for channels. it is described quite nicely by @adbenitez at

so, “tappable hashtags on all platforms” are now normal feature proposal, that need to be weighted against the hundreds others. we’re not saying it will never come, but just now our limited resources are spend better elsewhere
