Problem is that your contacts will usually have a different, much lower limits. So if you try to send such attachment to another server, your mail will not reach the recipient.

I just can’t stop thinking about this!
it will be really nice to be able to send large files(up to 100MBs)
splitting the files to 10MB part seems really good.

Somehow is it possible to add this thing in DC?

Is it correct that the size of attachments is limited by the mail server provider’s restrictions?

Hello 👋,
yes, this is correct.
Many mail providers provide cloud storage in addition to the email account.
Therefore, in my opinion, the best solution for large files is simply to send a cloud link.
Then the recipient can decide whether and when to download the file.
In addition, not so much memory is occupied in his mailbox.
A possible link password can be transmitted in encrypted form via DC.
Unfortunately, iCloud links only work with other Apple users.
But there really are enough other cloud providers.
By the way, it is also possible to mimic the status feature of WhatsApp in DC with a cloud service.

> [@Delta Chat "Status" features](https://support.delta.chat/t/delta-chat-status-features/1107/10):
>
> There is a way to mimic WhatsApp’s status feature quite well with DC. To do this, one first have to create a broadcast list and select the recipients. After that, disappearing messages must be set to 24 hours A cloud service is also required. That shouldn’t be a problem as many email accounts have one. Usually these services allow creating a temporary link for files in the cloud. So one create such a link for selected images in the cloud and send it via broadcast list. Recipients can now s…

What do you think about webxdc-based workarounds, such as the following?

> Yes. There also exist webxdc for sending files directly between participants without any limitations: [Realtime Chat - quandang](https://webxdc.org/apps/#realtime-chat) High speed file transfer and low latency messaging. Both sender and receiver need to open the app to transfer files. If not, messages and image previews will be sent through the regular updates and files won’t be sent. In my opinion, file sizes over 128 MiB don’t make much sense for messengers. Furthermore, this would likely place too much of a burden on the chatmail servers and cause problems if compatibility with regular email servers is to be maintained, as most probably wouldn’t accept attachments larger than 20 MiB.

One solution might be to integrate a service like Wormhole into DC, if it’s open source:

> **[Wormhole - Simple, private file sharing](https://wormhole.app)**
>
> Wormhole lets you share files with end-to-end encryption and a link that automatically expires.

Users could configure a file server in the settings. If an attachment is larger than 20 MiB, DC would encrypt the file with the public key, upload it to the server, and send the link to the recipient in an encrypted, invisible message.

DC on the recipient’s side would download this file. If the sender receives a read receipt, DC would delete the file from the server; otherwise after 24 hours.

These servers could host users for their own use or publicly for others, as is already the case with chatmail relays.

Such file servers could also be used to implement a status feature similar to WhatsApp. In this way, recipients’ mailboxes would not be flooded with status images/videos that they might not even want to see.

A centralized option (where the default or only option is a specific server) is a bad idea because it gives centralized control and makes the system less resilient and easy to block.

Currently I tend to use Magic Wormhole when possible for large files, as pointed @racuna. Could it be implemented on Delta Chat or on a Webxc app?

On the other hand, I have been also told of [IPFS](https://ipfs.tech) (such as proposed by @polpetta and @jhermann ), which would be the better solution for large files sharing.

Such a solution would make Delta Chat really powerful

If it is viable to [make a proof of concept](https://support.delta.chat/t/whats-the-state-of-sending-files-via-delta-september-2026/5734/5), using any of the commented tools (Iron based, IPFS based, etc.), please try. Starting for something is the way to get an end.
