why not? please elaborate.

while many other messengers have an option to not generate link previews, it is uncommon to have an option to not display already generated ones. usually, Delta Chat does not provide options on that level of detail, unless there are very good reasons for the masses. an “i want it that way” is usually not enough 🙂

Not necessary. Some people like brussel sprouts and some people hate them. 50% of the world thinks cilantro tastes like soap. We do not force-serve brussel sprouts or cilantro, we allow the human to eat what they choose. The proposal I replied to removes user choice, instead providing only one world view (theirs) to be made possible in the solution.

Can you explain your preference though? Do you also dislike it when people send you images in general?

The proposal you replied to actually kept user choice. It just made the default what the vast majority of apps and users expect.

Hey everyone,

after being annoyed by the usual “solutions” to share a “rich snippet” (Meta data and if possible also the meta image) of an URL in Delta Chat with e.g. “Webpage bot” I found a little but practicable workaround **for Android users**.

Would be great if this kind of feature (local generation of the meta data snippet) would be implemented in the native apps (Desktop and Mobile) someday.

To share a “rich URL” you just need to install [Markdownr](https://f-droid.org/packages/com.sanzoghenzo.markdownr/) from F-Droid. This app generates a Markdown-compatible snippet from an URL and shares it afterwards.

## Workflow

- Open [Markdownr](https://f-droid.org/packages/com.sanzoghenzo.markdownr/) **once** and open the settings with the three dot menu in the upper right corner. **SELECT** `Include URL in content` and `Include Excerpt` and **DESELECT** `Include Body`

> Now you are ready to share “rich URLs” easily.

- Copy the URL you want to share to the clipboard and/or share it with Androids native sharing functionality
- _Optional:_ Remove unnecessary / annoying tracking parameters with [Léon](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.svenjacobs.app.leon) / [URLCheck](https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.trianguloy.urlchecker/)
- Share (the cleaned URL) with [Markdownr](https://f-droid.org/packages/com.sanzoghenzo.markdownr/)
- Now the app automatically creates a Markdown-compatible snippet and opens the share menu again:

- Now choose e.g. ArcaneChat / Delta Chat to share the rich text

## Conclusion

Unfortunately there’s no image included (yet). But I think this could be a good **Proof-of-concept** for a **still-to-implement native functionality** in the desktop and the mobile apps. And with only **one additional step** you can **help others** to gain more information from a shared URL without the need of additional bots.

What do you think about this? Feel free to share your thoughts 🙏

_PS: 100% written by human, not by “AI”._

Hi all, somewhat tangential, but I’m wondering if it’s possible to develop link previews for link-based invites to dc itself ? Currently, sharing a link inviting a prospective dc user to chat with you is intimidating to most (massive cryptic url), so would benefit from some kind of embedded preview that displays _Message XYZ on Delta Chat_ or _Join the XYZ group chat_

EDIT, I realize there is a neutral _Message privately on Delta Chat_ preview, so my inquiry is more about including some of the existing slug info in this preview, e.g. if it’s a group chat, it could be a more opinionated message like _Join the XYZ group chat_. In theory, this is actually more transparent, signaling to the potential user what they’re getting themselves into before committing.

For individual chats and group chats, the sharer’s username is already in the share link. For group chats, the group name is also in the share link. So it could be something like:

1. _Message **XYZ** on Delta Chat_
2. _Join **XYZ** in **123** on Delta Chat_

EDIT2: I’ve created a separate post for this since it’s a diff topic: [More detailed chat invite link preview](https://support.delta.chat/t/more-detailed-chat-invite-link-preview/5826)
