I like to spread news and interesting stuff to multiple users using Delta Chat. Using a group or channel for that is not possible as I explicitly want to maintain a 1:1 chat with the given persons.
So I for example upload a 10MB audio file with an interview to one of the chats with a friend and redirect this message to five other persons afterwards.
Is the exact same file being stored six times on my device (because every chat is its own entity) or is there already a deduplication mechanism in place which recognizes that this file is identical within those chats so it is only stored once and being “symlinked” to the other chats?
An alternative approach would be some kind of “deduplication worker” which can be run automatically / manually and which starts to find duplicates, removes them and symlinks all remaining references to the remaining file.
Especially on mobile devices storage space is a precious thing so this could be a simple mechanism to decrease overall storage use, especially if you are using Delta Chat over years. This should apply for Desktop clients as well.
Looking forward to ideas and thoughts on that. ![]()
